Prairie Vista Village Wins Newell Franklin Award
The Newell/Franklin Award is given in recognition of an individual’s or group’s dedication to community service and tireless support of the Altoona Area Chamber of Commerce, as was exemplified by Bill Newell and Charles and Paulette Franklin.
It is no secret that there are plenty of volunteer opportunities in this community but finding volunteers can sometimes be a challenge. Unless you know the right people….
The Chamber has had the pleasure of discovering a very special group of individuals that are passionate about serving in their community and they have become our “go-to” for a few of our biggest events!
From knitting and donating hats to the Iowa Heart Center, to building mini-golf holes for local elementary schools, to stuffing hundreds of bags for the SEP Back to School Breakfast and the annual Nippy Hippie 5K, the residents of Prairie Vista Village are some of our favorite people!
When we were tasked with coming up with something special for the 150th celebration as our parade entry, there was only one man we could think of to lean into for the project. Bob Gulling, Prairie Vista Village resident carpenter extraordinaire, was game and up for the task. We sat down, he sketched out his plan and we were off to the races! He built a huge birthday cake in just 48 hours!
This past holiday season, the residents adopted 10 children in the community to provide them with much needed items, and we’re sure a few extra special toys for Christmas.
Prairie Vista Village just recently won the 2019 Best of Assisted Living Award from SeniorAdvisor.com, and was recognized as 1 of 2 nursing homes in the metro for Top Rated Nursing Home for Performance with a 5 Star Rating! The “Nursing Home Finder,” released by U.S. News & World Report, evaluated more than 15,000 nursing homes across the country to come up with the list of homes designated as the best. In Iowa, 68 care centers made the list, but only two are adult care providers in the metro area — Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines and Prairie Vista Village in Altoona.
We love that everyone is recognizing what we’ve known all along, Prairie Vista Village staff and residents are the very best around! Congratulations to you all as the 2018 Newell/Franklin Award winners for your ongoing support of the Chamber and this community!
